Exercise 1: This exercise provides students with a rule that serves to signal that the g CHANGES to the sound /j/ when followed by an e, i, or y. 

1. Place the visual image reminder chart (Gyles the gentle giraffe) in a clearly visible place. 

2. Use the following cards: ga, go, gu, gr, gl, gi, ge, and gy. Tell the students that, as each of the cards is flashed they should say /g/ (hard g sound) in response except when g is followed by e, i, or y and then they should say “CHANGE”. This should be drilled until students can do it without looking at the image reminder chart. Point out that the sound it changes to is /j/

3. Now flash the cards again and the students should say /g/ or /j/ in their response as the case may be. 

4. Then, use card drill for hard and soft g again as you show the word cards. Some have soft g and some hard and some both. For example, if you show the card RAGE students should respond by saying, “/j/ rage”. Have them say the sound the g makes first and then have them say the word. 

Exercise 2: Decodable words for reading.

1. Have students read the words using a hard g or a soft g depending on the rule. 

Exercise 3: Decodable words for dictation. 

1. Tell students that any /j/ sound in a word will be spelled with a g or ge. 

2. Read each word slowly to the student. Have the student verbally repeat the word and then write the word. 

Exercise 4: Decodable sentences for reading.

1. Have students read the sentences using a hard g or a soft g depending on the rule. 

Exercise 5: Decodable sentences for dictation. 

1. Tell students that any /j/ in a word in these sentences will be spelled with a g or ge.

2. Read each sentence slowly to the student. Have the student verbally repeat the sentence and then write the sentence.
